The Highlights Dunedin

Regent Theatre Dunedin - October 2020

MUSICAL THEATRE RETURNS TO REGENT THEATRE 2020

Friday 3rd July 2020

Musical theatre will make a welcome return to the Regent Theatre in October when local producers DKCM, Taieri Musical and Musical Theatre Dunedin join forces to present the Highlights, a compilation show celebrating the musicals they have collectively staged over the last decade.

“Covid 19 devasted our 2020 seasons of Les Miserables and Mamma Mia so we felt we needed to do something to ensure our performers and patrons remained connected and entertained”, says Doug Kamo, producer of the Highlights.

The Highlights will showcase popular songs from 18 productions that have been staged over the last decade by DKCM, Taieri Musical and Musical Theatre Dunedin with principal performers from the original Dunedin seasons returning to the stage to reprise their roles.

Collectively the three producers are responsible for the thriving Dunedin musical theatre scene having produced, amongst others - WICKED, The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mary Poppins, Grease: The Arena Spectacular Live, Miss Saigon, The Sound of Music, Les Miserables, Oliver, Spamalot, Jesus Christ Superstar, Blood Brothers which will all feature in the Highlights.

“Traditionally our organisations have worked independently of each other with only our volunteers, performers and crews floating between all three but in a year where we will record significant losses we decided a combined approach was the best way forward to ensuring Dunedin enjoys a major musical in 2020”, June Driver, president of Musical Theatre Dunedin said.

The Highlights will be presented with a fully local cast of over 60 principal and ensemble cast members from the postponed Les Miserables and Mamma Mia seasons as well as over 40 children and a 15-piece orchestra.

“The Highlights will showcase the strength of our musical theatre community whilst utilising local businesses to provide production, marketing, advertising, and event services. We’ve made a commitment to remain local across all areas of the production so by purchasing a ticket you are supporting many local businesses along the way”, Blair Hughson, president of Taieri Musical says.

Directed by Doug Kamo with musical direction by Stuart Walker, choreography by Emma Donaldson and vocal direction by Beth Waite, the Highlights season starts on 14 October 2020 at the Regent Theatre with preferential tickets on sale from 9.00am Friday 10 July 2020.
